The M08 EQ Power+ power unit is the fourth expansion stage of the turbo hybrid generation. It was developed in order to withstand the significantly stronger physical stresses due to the use of the new rules as well as to endure a harder operation cycle. At the same time, potential performance developments should be exploited as best possible. During the unveiling of the new car, Toto Wolff said: "The new rules for 2017 were developed, with the help of a large growth in aerodynamic performance, to build the fastest F1 cars in history. They should be harder for the drivers to drive and hopefully, from the point of view of the fans, look more spectacular. The first races will be the proof of this, but we believe we have met this goal. With a view of the relative performance, every change of rules includes a certain element of restart. However, this also offers a great opportunity. We must now remain modest and keep both feet on the ground. No team has yet run a race under the new rules. We therefore all have the same number of points: namely nil."
