The engines of the new generation of the A-Class are high-torque but also work efficiently. This is particularly true of the models A 150 FE and A 170 FE with ECO start/stop function which will be available from September 2008.
The A-Class petrol engines are anything but ordinary. And they certainly deserve the good grades they get. Our engineers have gone all out to ensure that these engines really perform. You have the choice of the A 150 with 70 kW (95 hp), the A 170 with 85 kW (116 hp) and the A 200 with 100 kW (136 hp). Even the entry-level model delivers a superb maximum torque of 140 Nm at 3500 to 4000 rpm. The A 200 achieves 185 Nm at 3500 to 4000 rpm, while the A 200 TURBO leads the list with 280 Nm at 1800 to 4850 rpm.
A plus for the environment and your wallet comes courtesy of the ECO start/stop function which will be available in the A 150 FE and A 170 FE with manual transmission from September 2008: at the traffic light and in stop-and-go traffic this function reduces fuel consumption and prevents emissions by automatically switching off the engine – and it starts it up again in fractions of a second, as soon as you engage a gear.
(A 150: fuel consumption combined: 6.2–7.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 148–166 g/km; A 150 FE: fuel consumption combined: 5.8–6.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 139–149 g/km; A 170: fuel consumption combined: 6.6–7.1 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 157–169 g/km; A 170 FE: fuel consumption combined: 6.1–6.5 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 146–154 g/km; A 200: fuel consumption combined: 7.2–7.4 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 172–176 g/km; A 200 TURBO: fuel consumption combined: 7.9–8.1 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 187–192 g/km)[1]
For high performance with low consumption, you can count on the common-rail diesel engines of the A-Class. Their figures speak for themselves, and this is where the A 160 CDI Coupé does particularly well in terms of economy: the environmental institute Öko-Trend awarded it the Automobile Environmental Certificate 2007 as "one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles with a conventional engine". In comprehensive tests the engine had an impressive showing with its excellent figures for fuel consumption and exhaust and noise emissions – 60 kW (82 hp) with a maximum torque of 180 Nm at 1400 to 2600/min and average consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 km.
The A 180 CDI is ready to go with 80 kW (109 hp) and 250 Nm at 1600 to 2600/min. Thanks to its 103 kW (140 hp) and a torque of 300 Nm at 1600 to 3000/min (in conjunction with the transmission AUTOTRONIC 280 Nm), with this top model you’ll have only one thing on your mind: your next drive.
